How Custom Jewelry is Priced

Because each piece of custom jewelry we make has never been made before and is made from scratch, it is difficult to give an accurate quote until we have a full design meeting. Sometimes custom jewelry costs more than pre-made jewelry, and sometimes it costs less. Regardless of what you design, the level of care and intent that goes into it is much higher than something that is mass-produced. Your individual ring will be conceptualized and cast in metal just for you. Stones are sourced just for you and hand selected by you. The price is determined by the materials used and fluctuation in costs, rarity of stones and difficulty of sourcing, and the complexity of design. Our custom engagement rings start at $6,000.

Factors That Influence Price

Center Stone Type

One of the top drivers of cost is the rarity and the size of the center stone. Depending on the type of stone you use, the price can vary widely. Many factors impact the price of diamonds and gemstones including the carat weight, the stone’s cut, clarity, and color, as well as the rarity of the stone. Generally, mined diamonds are the most expensive option, but there are some rare gemstones than can fetch a higher price tag. Lab created options are available for most gemstones and diamonds, and cost less than their mined counterparts.

Center Stone Size

Typically, a center stone price is the highest at certain major carat weight milestones like 1.0 carat, 1.5 carat, 2.0 carat, 2.5 carat and so on. Selecting a carat weight just under one of these milestones (like a 1.8 carat diamond as opposed to a 2.0 carat) can cost considerably less.

Center Stone Quality

At Abby Sparks Jewelry, we only use certified, eye clean, great quality stones. Please expect to find lower price points for rings created at high volume with similar sized stones that are not eye-clean or great color. You can find a 3.0 carat poor quality diamond that is very visibly flawed and cloudy for much less than a 3.0 carat diamond we would stand behind and use in our own jewelry.

Using a Repurposed Stone

Designing engagement rings with our clients’ heirloom stones is a specialty of ours and will save you the cost of a new center stone. That being said, we require proper documentation of the stone and must clear it for quality, durability, and design compatibility.

Metals Used

The price of precious metals constantly fluctuate. Generally, platinum and palladium will drive up cost more so than yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold. No matter the metal used, the amount used will typically influence cost. The metal used in 6mm wide band ring will cost more than the same metal in a thinner 2mm design.

Complexity of design

No two pieces of custom jewelry we make are the same, and they vary widely in design complexity. A very intricate design will drive up price because as it take more man hours in the design phase, in the 3D modeling phase, and to handcraft.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a design meeting consultation cost?

Our one hour design meetings are $100. If you decide to move forward with creating a custom piece, the $100 will go toward your final price.

Can you give me a quote before my design meeting?

Because each piece we make is built from the ground up and is so unique, it is difficult to give an accurate quote without having a full design meeting. We encourage you to browse our engagement ring portfolio to see the range of projects we’ve made in the past.

How much does custom jewelry cost?

Our Custom Engagement Rings typically start at $6,000. Many factors impact the price of custom jewelry such as gemstone preferences like type of stone, carat weight, cut and clarity.  Additional price influences include metal type, overall dimensions of a piece, design complexity and detail, rarity of gemstones to be sourced, quantity of gemstones to be set, and more. To learn more about our pricing read our blog How Much is a Custom Ring or give us a call at 303-957-6502.

Can you work with my budget?

We typically have two approaches to designing. We can design around what the client loves or around a budget. If you have a particular budget above our base starting point for custom fine jewelry of $4,000 and custom engagement rings of $6,000, we pride ourselves on guiding people with designs and corresponding metals, gemstones & diamonds that best suite their financial needs but that still provide a great value, both visually and in quality. Designing around what you love means that there isn’t a fixed budget, but rather a determined budget range for the general look and materials. Either way, design parameters are part of a conversation that we have at the initial design consultation. Financing available.

When do I pay for my custom jewelry?

Payments for custom jewelry are divided into three installments. First you pay a $500 design deposit to get the ball rolling. Then we require a fifty percent deposit for all custom pieces, to be paid before commissioned jewelry goes into production. You’ll pay the final 50% installment upon delivery.
