What Is A Moonstone?

Famous for its otherworldly glow, moonstone is a member of the feldspar family and it’s signature play of color is caused by light diffraction (called adularescence) caused by the alternating layers that occur during formation. Moonstone occurs all over the world including Australia, Mexico, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Moonstone has been used in jewelry since antiquity and has resurged in popularity in Art Deco era jewelry, and new age designs popular in the 1960’s and 1990’s, and most recently in alternative engagement rings. Across history and cultures, moonstone has been associated with moonlight. Moonstone is said to bring good luck, inner growth, and strength.

Is A Moonstone Engagement Ring Right For You?

Moody and magical, moonstone is singular in its dreamy, gleaming look. Moonstone engagement rings tend to look bohemian and alternative. However beautiful moonstone engagement rings are, we do not recommend them, not even for the most cautious wearers. Moonstones are a soft and fragile stone and require extreme levels of care. Moonstone Pros and Cons

Pros

  • No other gemstone has this distinct adularescence play-of-color

Cons

  • Not as durable or hard as diamonds, moissanite, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, morganite, or even opal
  • Gemstone durability is rated from 1-10 on the Mohs Scale of hardness, moonstones are a 6 – 6.5
  • Because of their softness, moonstones require extreme care because of their tendency to chip, scratch and crack
  • Cleavage is an indication of weakness that makes a stone more prone to breaking and moonstone has two cleavage directions

Who Is A Moonstone Engagement Ring Right For?

Unfortunately, moonstones are not a durable stone choice. They are definitely not for you if you lead an active lifestyle, work with your hands, or are rough on your jewelry. Moonstone engagement rings are not even a good choice if you don’t work with your hands. The level of care and caution needed to maintain a moonstone engagement ring are just not realistic.
